LEAD MAGNETS
Why most B2B lead magnets create activity, not useful demand
A lead magnet should help someone make a decision they are already trying to make.
Start with the decision, not the format
Before choosing template, playbook, or report, write down the decision the reader is avoiding or struggling to make. The resource should make that next decision easier. It does not need to solve the entire operating problem.
Three warning signs
- It promises a result without a defined situation.
- It is useful to everyone, so it reveals little about the reader.
- It has no natural next useful question after completion.
A practical design brief
- The reader is: [specific role or company stage].
- They are trying to decide: [one decision].
- The resource helps by: [one method].
- They leave with: [a diagnosis, draft, or plan].
- The next useful step is: [resource, newsletter, or diagnostic].
Measure usefulness beyond downloads: completion, replies, return visits, follow-on reading, subscriptions, and qualified calendar clicks all tell a more useful story.
