GLOSSARY · LINKEDIN MECHANICS
Sales Navigator
Sales Navigator is LinkedIn's paid prospecting product, sold as a subscription separate from Premium. It provides advanced search across people and companies with filters such as seniority, function, company size, geography and recent changes, lets users save leads and accounts into lists, alerts them to activity by those leads, and includes a monthly allowance of InMail messages to people outside their network. It also integrates with several CRM systems. For personal branding, it is the tool used to find and follow the people the content is written for, so that commenting and outreach reach a chosen audience rather than a random one.
How it works in practice
Sales Navigator sits on top of LinkedIn's member data and gives a seller or founder a controlled view of it. The core workflow is to define the ideal customer profile as search filters, run searches to find matching people and companies, save them as lists, and then watch the alerts: job changes, posts published, company news. Those alerts are the link to personal branding. A saved lead who publishes a post is an opportunity to leave a relevant comment; a lead who changes jobs is a reason to send a short, specific message. Used this way, Sales Navigator turns commenting from a broadcast habit into targeted work, and it tells you whether your content is reaching the right people, since you can check whether saved leads appear among your post viewers or followers.
The product has limits. Its searches are only as good as the profile data, which is self-reported and often stale. InMail is widely ignored when it reads as a template. And the subscription is not cheap for an individual, so it pays only if the lists are actually worked. Many founders find a middle path: a month of Sales Navigator to build the lists and understand the audience, then the free account for day-to-day publishing and commenting.
Example
A founder builds a Sales Navigator list of 150 heads of operations at logistics firms with 50 to 500 staff. Each morning she checks which of them posted, comments on two or three, and records which ones later view her profile or follow her.
Common mistake
Using Sales Navigator as a bulk InMail machine. Hundreds of templated messages to people who have never seen the sender's content get ignored or reported, and the reputation damage reaches the people the content was supposed to win over.
